ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an artist whose work explores the body as an instrument to perceive. At the center of my work in performance, sculpture, and installation is a question—why the search for certainty when our bodies are such unreliable tools? My work emphasizes the unsettling aspects of inhabiting a body, giving voice to our more unpredictable and animalistic qualities.

I have an ongoing interest in the idea that the external landscape can induce internal truths. I have staged work in sublime landscapes and also brought elements of the wilderness into the gallery. Reflective bodies of water appear frequently in my work, along with water’s role as a transformative material.

My work often relies on disorientation and displacement as a way to draw parallels between perception and belief. I often use limited lighting situations that heighten the viewer’s reliance on sight while provoking a feeling that our bodies are inadequate tools for understanding.
